Robert Craft, who has spent the past six weeks in training school at Salina, will be stationed in Marion for 42 days of observation training as a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper. He will be under the close supervision of Trooper Frank Boyle. Craft is from Clay Center His wife and son will wait to move to Marion until he returns from the final phase of training.
Ty Branson and Douglas Heerey have been accepted at Friends University. Branson, son of the Rev. and Mrs. David Branson, plans to study physical education. Heerey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Heerey, will be studying business administration.
County Attorney Douglas Westerhaus has been named chairman of the Kansas Bar Association's Referral Service. This is the second consecutive year that Westerhaus has served as chairman of the referral service.
Recent rains have boosted produce derby entries. Mrs. George Vinduska is pictured with a nine-pound cantaloupe grown in her Pilsen garden; Lilly and Lucy Guerra, daughters of Dr. and Mrs. Tomas Guerra, share in the glory of growing their own 1.25 pound tomato; while Ramie, 4, and Nikki, 2, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Bina of Lincolnville, have their hands full with produce. Ramie is holding two 2.5 pound cucumbers and Nikki is displaying a 2.75 pound tomato. The girls took care of the vegetables while their grandfather, Ezra Helmer of Marion, was on vacation.
Central Park was the setting July 30 for a newcomers' gathering. The event was sponsored by 20th Century Club,. Newcomers attending were Laurie Shaneyfelt, Terri Jensen, Karen Westerhaus, Debbie Shumate, Kay Davenport, Candy Hall and Jan Martin.
David Mueller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Mueller of rural Tampa, will receive the $250 Telefund Alumni Scholarship and the $1,000 Farmland Industries Scholarship at Kansas State University this fall. He is a junior studying agricultural economics, and is a 1970 graduate of Centre High School.
John George, an FFA exchange student from Wales, will live with the David Bowers family for the next three weeks.
