Max McDowell, a former newspaper and broadcast reporter now living in Elmdale, is convinced that the federal government plans to make Lyons, Kan., an international spent nuclear reactor fuel repository. And with stacks of papers and books, he's pretty convincing.
One hundred years ago this month, a group of Catholics who had established a colony in the southeastern corner of Marion County sent a plat map of St. Francis City back to Cincinnati to be filed officially. Burns, as it has been called since, will celebrate its centennial this weekend.
Dr. Ted Garner, former Marion chiropractor who has moved to Washington, Kansas, won his bid for nomination for county commissioner in the Washington County primary election last week.
Lori Schmidtberger was guest of honor at a "come and go" bridal shower July 25 at the home of Mrs. Frank Boyle. Hostesses were Mrs. Boyle, Mrs. Ezra Helmer, Mrs. Gary Carlson, Mrs. Will Helmer, Mrs. James Ottensmeier, Mrs. Lee Bernhardt and Mrs. Harry Koslowsky.
Births announced in this issue include a daughter, Lisa Anna, born to Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Stone of Prairie Village; and a daughter, Heather Nicole, born to Mr. and Mrs. Craig Matz of Marion.
Bud Pierce, owner of Pierce Oil and Fertilizer Service, has been honored for outstanding service in the marketing of petroleum products. He was presented the award by Conoco, Inc. Pierce had been associated with Conoco since 1946 and had been the jobber for the company in Marion since 1956.
