Though Central Park felt more like a sauna, and display tables sank several inches into soft ground, 62 exhibitors showed up Saturday for Marion's second annual Art in the Park day. The event is sponsored by PRIDE and the Marion Chamber of Commerce.

Though nobody is sure what they mean, the results of the Kansas tests on competency based education for public school students are back. And Marion County students rate higher than the state average in both reading and mathematics proficiency.

Two of Marion's best known public servants will soon retire, closing out a combined total of 67 years of employment for the Postal Service. Ray Vinduska, 64, Marion postmaster, will end 35 years of service Aug. 29 and A.F. "Tommy" Thompson, 57, superintendent of postal operations, also will retire Friday after 32 years of service.

Double ring marriage vows were repeated by Lori Kay Schmidtberger and Patrick Christopher Loney Aug. 9 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Pilsen.

Three students from Marion County received degrees at the end of the summer semester at Wichita State University. They are: Julie Matthews, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Matthews of Marion; Nancy Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Olsen of Marion; and Anthony Diaz, son of Benjamin Diaz of Florence.

The summer reading program and "Story Hour" at the Marion City Library came to a close Aug. 9, with 55 children having participated. Reading certificates were awarded to those who completed reading 20 or more books.
