Produce Derby entries this week include two five-pound cantaloupes brought in by seven-year-old John Jirak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Jirak; twin "Patty Pan" squash on a single stem bought in by Mrs. Benard Stromberg of rural Florence; and Kentucky Wonder beans, bell peppers, and "burpless" cucumbers from the garden of Mrs. Lawrence Winkley.
Delano O'Dell of Florence has been named full-time deputy with the Marion County Sheriff's Department.
The annual "soap game" football scrimmage will be held Friday on the gridiron at Marion Sports Complex. Warrior coach Bill Pickering said he hopes the stadium will be filled with fans. Admission will be by a bar of soap.
Warren and Marilyn Hett of Marion are the parents of a son, Phillip Ray, born Aug. 21 at Bethel Deaconess Hospital in Newton; Margie and Harry Bennett of rural Marion announce the birth of a daughter, Hallie Elder Bennett, on Aug. 24 at the Bennett home; and Douglas and Karen Westerhaus of Marion are the parents of a son, John Joseph, born Aug. 26 at Bethel Deaconess Hospital, Newton.
Terry and Carol Allen pleaded not guilty to two counts of first degree murder and one count of conspiratory murder Wednesday in Marion County District Court. The Allens are charged in the August 1977 deaths of a rural Tampa couple, Dennis and Evelyn Armstrong.
The Lincolnville Fire Department was called to Emma Rudolph's farm at Pilsen early Monday morning to help fight a fire caused when lightning struck her barn. Strong winds made it impossible to put out the fire and the barn and its contents burned to the ground. Three calves also were lost in the fire.
The American "Mother of the Year," Jean Crouch of Topeka, will be the speaker when St. Luke Hospital Auxiliary holds its annual meeting and dinner Sept. 10. Crouch was named Kansas Mother in February and went on to New York where she was selected as American Mother at the organization's 46th annual convention.
