This past week, James J. "Jimmy" Ryan, 83, retired Florence businessman established the "James J. Ryan Scholarship Fund" at the University of Kansas to pay expenses of a boy from this area who will attend KU and the University of Kansas Medical School. A Marion High School senior, John Loney, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Loney, has already been recommended and tentatively approved as the first recipient of the scholarship.
Wint Smith, formerly of Emporia, has purchased the S&S Oil Co. station and Phillips 66 bulk agency in Marion. He took over ownership and management on Monday of this week.
Rendel Newsom was the featured speaker at Marion Kiwanis Club Monday noon. He told about his pencil collection. Newsom has pencils from all over the world and has been an avid fan of this interesting hobby for about 20 years.
Jackie Thomas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Thomas and a freshman at Kansas State University, Manhattan, has been chosen from West Hall as a candidate for "Rodeo Queen."
A team of red headed girls will challenge a team of men March 11 at the Tabor College gymnasium in Hillsboro. The Moore All American Red Heads will play a team comprised of CVL coaches, teachers, and businessmen.
Nine Marion County students are among those on the scholastic honor list at Kansas State University. They are Danny Ray Peterson, Burdick; Leslie B. Allison and Michael C. Crawford, Florence; Nancy S. Bartel and Jay M. Pankratz, Hillsboro; Larry E. Schmidt, Lehigh; Larry Goerzen, Newton; and Richard Lee Winter and Ronald Lee Stucky, Peabody.
Fred Allen, former Marion County Clerk and Marion City Clerk, has accepted an offer to work for the League of Kansas Municipalities in Topeka. He will serve as County Research Director with the organization. The Allen family moved to Topeka this past weekend.
