Principal James Weinmann announced Tuesday evening at commencement exercises that John Loney and Dan Steinel are valedictorian and salutatorian of the class of 1968 at Marion High School. John is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Loney of RFD 5 and Dan is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Steinel of Marion.

James J. Ryan of Florence was honored recently when the Most Rev. David M. Maloney, Bishop of Wichita, came to his home to present him with a plaque, a gift of priests of the diocese, in recognition of Mr. Ryan's gift of $33,675 to the elderly priest's retirement fund.

Capt. Laura Jane Bredemeier, who was stationed at Fort Wolters, Texas, has been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herb Bredemeier, for the past three weeks. She is on her way to Vietnam and will be stationed there for the next year.

Marion's star athlete, Gary Melcher, was a double winner at the state track meet held Friday and Saturday at Salina and shattered one record. He won first place in the discus with a throw of 161'6" and broke the old record of 158'11" which had stood since 1961. He also won first place in the shotput with a mark of 54'11 1/4".

Miss Helen Olsen of Dodge City, bride-elect of John Reznicek Jr., was honored Saturday evening with a miscellaneous shower at the John Reznicek home in Lost Springs. Hostesses were Mrs. Robert Makovec and Mrs. Eugene Stika.

The musical group, "Turtlenecks," who were the grade school winners in the recent Jaycees Talent Contest, will appear May 27 on the Elmer Childress program on Channel 3. The group is comprised of Joni Kroupa, trumpet, Sharon Kroupa, piano, and Gary Holub, drums.
