Pete Goentzel, 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Goentzel, was killed instantly Saturday evening when the late model Chevrolet he was driving was struck by a southbound fast freight at the Rock Island crossing on West Main Street in Marion.

Two Marion County girls were recently named as $100 scholarship winners by the Marion County Home Economics Advisory Committee, according to Mrs. Janet Meisinger, county extension home economist. Named as winners were Miss Mary Schimpf, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Schimpf of Marion, and Miss Nancy Bartel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Bartel of Hillsboro.

Bob Hoover, Marion golfer, accomplished the object of the game last week when he "aced out" on number three green at Marion Country Club.

Bryan Taylor, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Taylor, was the honored guest Saturday noon at a backyard cookout in observance of his fifth birthday. Friends who came to help him celebrate were Brad and Doug Heerey, Ronald and Rocky Kristek, Ronnie and Gerry Ehrlich, and Bryan's older brother, Bruce.

Double ring wedding vows were exchanged Sept. 9 by Miss Patricia Ann Warneke and Carl M. Elling Jr. in a ceremony performed by Rev. Edward Schade in Our Savior Lutheran Church.

Lucille Hett and Anita Weber were hostesses to members of the Harvey County Cosmetology Unit No. 38 recently at the Ernest Hett home. A potluck supper was enjoyed by 25 guests.

Cecilie Swain, nine-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Swain of Emporia, recently won a pony in a contest there. The pony came complete with saddle, halter, blanket, and all. It was just what she always wanted, and thrilled her no end. Cecilie is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Meier and Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Swain of Marion.
