SEPTEMBER 21, 1967
Hallett Quarries, south of town, has been bothered during the past few days by a fire, an explosion, and lightning. Ray Bryant was gassing his own 1967 Chevrolet pickup Friday evening in the pit of Conyers' quarry when it caught on fire. He ran up out of the pit and the fire spread rapidly to the portable tank which exploded. Both the pickup and the tank of gas were completely destroyed. Wednesday evening, lightning struck near the main office and shop building at the north quarry and burned out all three telephones.
Marion friends have received word that Mrs. Charlotte Martin of Topeka, formerly of Marion, is on a trip to Africa and South America.
Attending a cheerleading clinic at Abilene Friday were the following girls from Durham: Barbara Christiansen, Bonnie Hamm, Cindy Goertz, Connie Klein, Linda Miller, Jacqueline Kerbs, and Wendy Oblander. They were accompanied by Mrs. Godfrey Klein and Mrs. Irwin Geis.
Sister Scholastica, CRNA, director of nursing at St. Luke Hospital, presented "yellow awards" Thursday evening to Janice Jantz, Tammy Case, Jan Van Buren, Linda Oldham, and Nancy Olsen who have advanced to the top, fourth step in the Candy Striper program. Those who received red ribbons (third step award) were Vickie Klassen, Marsha Cowan, Beverly Hoch, and Cathy Coe. Pink ribbons went to Jackie Fender, Lucinda Jost, Brenda Foth, Debbi Case, Pam Griffith, Sandra Anderson, Shelly Batt, Linda Bernhardt, Donna Ewert, Janet Hanson, Brenda Helmer, Ginger Helmer, Anita Hett, Janet Lawrence, Betty Sue Linn, Sheryl Lueker, Brenda Nelson, Pat Regnier, Denise Schlehuber, Pam Slusser, Carol Vinduska, Denise Wiens, and Susan Wood. The Candy Stripers worked a grand total of 2,686 hours during the summer at Spain Guest Home and St. Luke Hospital.
