The Board of Social Welfare, made up of the three county commissioners, dismissed Mrs. R.K. (Selma) Maybell, director of the Marion County Department of Welfare, Monday morning at the regular meeting of the Marion County Commission. A spokesman for the group said the board felt that the people of Marion County wanted a change. The decision was arrived at from contacts made during the past year, it was stated. The board temporarily designated Mrs. Bill (Louise) Janzen as the executive officer.
Mrs. Marie Blankley, Marion, received $200 in this week's Cash Day drawing. M.E. Moody, Florence, received $5; Bob Boese, Marion, received $20; Ina Phillips, Marion, received $5; and Mrs. Marjorie Osgood, Cedar Point, missed $20.
Little Jay Sandwell had the misfortune to tumble down the stair step recently. The fall resulted in a cut on his chin that required three stitches.
Marion friends will be interested to learn of the recent promotion received by Mrs. Arnold Schwemmer, now of Wichita. Mrs. Schwemmer has been advanced from bookkeeper to manager of the parish office of St. James Episcopal Church in Wichita. Her husband, Arnold, is assistant chief examiner in the drivers license division of the Kansas State Motor Vehicle Department.
Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Weigart observed their 20th wedding anniversary last Saturday evening with dinner at the Ramada Inn in Newton. The Weigarts' daughter, Julie Anne, celebrated her fifth birthday Jan. 23. Birthday cake and ice cream were enjoyed by Jeannie, Jane, and Sarah Seibel.
The Boy Scout troop of Marion has set Monday night for their "Court of Honor" meeting at the Christian church. Ten new Scouts will be welcomed into the group. Star and Life awards and merit badges will be presented to those who have earned them. Boy Scout Week will be observed Feb. 6 to 13. Daryl Enos will receive the God and Country Award at Eastmoor United Methodist Church. The entire troop plans to attend the ceremony.
