Major Laura J. Bredemeier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herb Bredemeier of Marion, received her BS degree in nursing from Drury College, Springfield, Mo., and will report February 21 to the student detachment at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, to attend a faculty development unit course. After three weeks she will be assigned to teach the formal operating room course at Letterman General Hospital at Presidio of San Francisco. She joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in 1964 and has been stationed in Hawaii two years and spent one year in Vietnam.
Thomas J. Francis took over as superintendent of state highway maintenance for District 3, Marion, January 1. He replaces Lester Henderson who retired January 1 after 40 years service. Francis and his wife, Gayle, have three sons and one daughter.
Second semester forensic activities have started at Marion High School. Those attending a clinic at Valley Center on Saturday were Leila Bingaman, Randy Conyers, Cindy Esslinger, Andy Ferrell, Rose Goentzel, John Higgins, Terry Holt, Cora Klassen, Greg May, Dennis Schafers, Leo Waner, Jeanna Fulton, and Arlene Gaffney.
Members of Marion Kiwanis Club heard Vance Carlson, McPherson, tell of his experiences as a Big-Eight official at their regular meeting Monday. He has been working Big 8 games for 14 years and was an official at four out of the last six bowl games in which the conference was represented.
Jean Holt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Holt, has been declared the winner of the Betty Crocker "Homemaker of Tomorrow" award at Marion High School. She will enter state competition for many attractive prizes.
Thirty-nine Girl Scouts and four leaders were present at a songfest January 27th at the Christian Church. Rena Bingaman, Donna Sherbert and Marian Ewing played guitars with Mrs. Ewing. Sherry Kelly led the songs.
Cougar homecoming is February 11 when Centre will play Hillsboro. Queen candidates are seniors Mary Noone and Susie Klenda, juniors Kathy Mueller, and sophomores Jonie Deines and Glenda Fike.
