The all-new Duckwall variety store in Marion which opened for business today, Thursday, is brand new in every respect. The greatly expanded stock of merchandise, the modern fixtures and counters, and the remodeled building all represent a great deal of time, effort and money. Former store manager O.F. "Gus" Newlin was assisted by Jerry Commerford, assistant manager of the Duckwall store in Junction City, and Brook Beaston in getting merchandise in place for the new store.
Diana Goertz has been awarded a graduate assistantship in the Department of Family Economics School of Home Economics of Kansas State University. Miss Goertz is working toward her Master of Science degree in Family Economics. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Goertz of Marion.
Herbert E. Meier of Wichita has been named men's clothing merchandise manager for Sheplers of Wichita, one of the largest western apparel and equipment firms in the nation. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Meier of Marion and a graduate of Marion High School and Bethany College, Lindsborg.
Julie Zerger celebrated her 10th birthday Sunday afternoon when her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Zerger, invited a number of girls to a bowling party at MarBowl Lanes. Those present were Ann Christensen, Cindy Harris, Michelle Mellott, Jeanne Koslowsky, Lori Schmidtberger, Terri Enos, and Carol Colburn. Birthday cake and ice cream were served at the Zerger home following the bowling.
Mrs. Homer Reinke, Mrs. W.H. Carpenter, Mrs. Jack P. Hoffman and Mrs. Roger Hannaford spent from Tuesday until Thursday of last week at Tan-Tar-A, a resort near Ocean Bay, Mo.
Two brothers, Bill Weathers of the Seabees and Cpl. Robert Weathers of the Marine Corps accidentally met recently in Vietnam. Both knew the other was in the vicinity, but did not know the exact location. Their sister, Mrs. Marvin Bernhardt of Marion, reports that they were able to spend four hours together.
