Santa Fe freight team 87, westbound Tuesday morning from Emporia to Ellinwood ran into difficulty near the Ehrlich Mill one mile southeast of Marion. The track was washed out from a heavy rain during the night and the last eight cars of the 57-car train were derailed. Three cars turned over on their sides.
Robert Richmond state archivist with the Kansas State Historical Society in Topeka was the speaker at the Monday noon luncheon of the Marion Kiwanis club. He was introduced by Edward W. Colburn.
J.L Fruechting has been named county commissioner for the third district of Marion County to replace O.F. Herbert, who resigned two weeks ago.
The Marion horseshoe team maintained their winning ways Friday evening by defeating the McPherson II team 21 to 6 at McPherson. Members of the Marion team are LeRoy Bingaman, B.C. McCarty, Henry Klein, Tip McFadden, Rex Seibel, Dan Schlotthauer, Harold Swanson and Reinhart Steinle who is team captain.
Shelly Hett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Hett, freshman at Fort Hays State Teachers College, has been selected by the Marion Chamber of Commerce as a candidate for Marion County Fair Queen.
A contract was let last week to the Steve Jost Construction Co. of Marion to start building the memorial fountain to be situated near the northwest corner of Marion's Central Park. There still is time for those who wish to donate to the fountain to do so. Names may be placed on the memorial tablet for $100.
Marion Chamber of Commerce has conducted a survey of merchants to see if new closing hours are wanted or needed. The big majority of the businessmen who answered the survey said they wanted to be open one night of the week. And the majority favored keeping their store open on Saturday nights.
A new flagpole and rose garden were dedicated Sunday at St. Luke Hospital in memory of John E. Wheeler, Marion attorney, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Wheeler.
