Dr. E.K. Schroeder has brought Sam Johnson 25, a qualified dental technician to Marion to staff the laboratory that is a part of his professional offices. Sam Johnson and his wife, Paula, are getting acquainted and are endorsing Marion slogan, "Best Place I've Seen."
"Miss Marion County 1969," Margo Schroeder, left July 8 for the Miss Kansas competition at Pratt. Margo is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Schroeder of Hillsboro. She was sponsored by the Hillsboro Study Club on the contest which led to her being selected Miss Marion County.
Two and one-half years ago H.J. Born Stone Company, Wichita, began mining operations on land leased from Abram Thut northwest of Elmdale. The few million tons of limestone lay back of the jutting edge for a few million years. After mining, the huge blocks go to the plant where they are sawed and dressed, then sold under the name of Silverdale Stone.
Leslie Burkholder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Burkholder, celebrated her sixth birthday July 2 and was guest of honor at a party at the home of her parents. A delayed list of winners from the Cub Scout kite derby held June 14 is as follows: Mike Robinson had the largest kite and Gary Ewert the smallest. Mike also won the prize for having the best homemade kite, with Steven Smith taking second. Robinson was a clean sweep winner, also taking first honors for being first up and flying. Chris Jost took second in this category.
The Marion Babe Ruth team has won the Cottonwood Valley League championship with a record of 13 wins and no loses. Team members are Bill Newlin, Joey Navrat, Doug Keazer, Mike Bredemeier, Bill Finke Jr., Gary Holub, Jack Loomis, Don Bredemeier, Doug Marler, Roger Hannaford and Sid Robinson. The team now will go to Ottawa July 9 for the five-day regional Babe Ruth tournament.
