A few weeks ago Mr. and Mrs. Max Tharp lost their barn and machine shed to a costly fire. On Friday of last week they were pleasantly surprised when two dozen friends and neighbors showed up with tools in hand and proceeded to set about an old fashioned "barn raising." Among those helping were Ron and Willard Hett, John D. Hett, John Hett, Jim Hett, Lloyd Darrow, Melvin and Stanley Hett, Ron Eilerts, Walt and Roger Hiebert, Fred and Ralph Klein, Orlan Carroll, Ern Hett, Jesse Richter, Bob Richmond, Walt Hett, Bob Mathiot, Louis Larson, Harold Woerz, Clyde Olsen, Don Fruechting, and Clifford Hett.

Norman Mueller of Marion will be the assistant director of the six-day Student Council workshop beginning Aug. 4 at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

Misses Connie and Julie Bina spent last week with Mr. and Mrs. Gene Malir and family at Wilson. Julie and Connie entered the parade in honor of the annual Czech Festival with their cousins, Nancy and Rick Malir, and won 3rd prize dressed as Czech Indians of the Wilson-Pilsen tribe.

Mary Westerhaus, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin G. Westerhaus is one of 33 German language students at the University of Kansas attending a summer language institute in Holzkirchen, Germany. Along with the studies, the group will visit museums, take guided excursions, and attend theater and concert performances. They also will take a four day-trip to Austria and visit Berlin. Nadean Kruse, former vocal music instructor at Marion, made a special visit to Holzkirchen to visit Mary on her tour of Europe.

The Marion women's softball team is one of eight teams entered in a tournament at Hesston. The team will play Hutchinson Saturday for the tournament championship. Those playing for Marion include Connie Bina, Harriet Bina, Jean Childs, Becky Coe, Donna Holub, Frances Hunt, Rita Jost, Jeanne Keazer, Norma Kline, Janet Meisinger, Margie Schwartz, and Donna Shirley.
