Mary Westerhaus, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Westerhaus, Marion, returned home after eight weeks in Europe attending the KU Summer German Language Institute in Holzkirchen, Germany.
Edwin M. Wheeler, son of Mrs. John Wheeler, Marion, has been elected president of the National Plant Food Institute, in Washington, D.C., the trade association of the fertilizer industry. Wheeler, his wife Rosalie, and their two sons, Edwin M. Jr. and Christopher, will move from Chicago to Chevy Chase, Md., in the near future.
The Marion American Legion baseball team placed fifth in the state tournament in Hays.
Pee Wee victors in the post-season tournament completed Saturday evening at Marion Athletic Park was the team comprised of Doug Heerey, Layne Reusser, Darin Helmer, Danny Snelling, Richard Roberts, David Bryant, John Goentzel, Rodney Richmond, Brad Heerey, Steven Bryant, and Randy Richmond. The winning Midget team was made up of the following players: Bruce Taylor, Jim Hoch, Tim Christensen, Jim Coe, Monte Magathan, Doug Hague, Randy Conyers, David Carr, and Don Smith.
Gene Bowers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bowers, and Mike Steinel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Steinel, both of Marion, returned Friday from the Kansas High School student council workshop held on the KU in Lawrence.
Brig. Gen. Milton Ehrlich, a graduate of Marion High School and a 1933 graduate of Kansas State University, retired July 31 after 36 years of service. He has been commanding general of some 3,000 Colorado National Guardsmen. He will continue similar work for the Denver Civil Defense office.
