The Marion Housing Authority this week received notification that they have been approved by the Department of Housing and Urban Development for 28 low rent dwelling units. It is merely a reservation, and not a legal obligation.

The Marion High School football Warriors began fall drills this week and coach LeRoy Dreier said prospects look good at present for a very fine year. Sixty-seven boys turned out for the team. Twelve are lettermen and three of them — Steve May, Gary Melcher, and Kerry Domke — were all-league selections last year.

Capt. Laura Bredemeier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herb Bredemeier of Marion, has received a new assignment. Capt. Bredemeier is supervisor of the operating room at Quang Tri, Vietnam.

Yvonne Heidel was guest of honor at a surprise party Aug. 26 in Central Park. Yvonne was celebrating her ninth birthday. Hostesses were her mother Mrs. George Heidel, her sisters Norma, Debra, and Sara, and Sue Lundgren. Guests attending were Mary Lentz, Diane Woerz, Ann Christensen, Cindy Harris, Julie Zerger, Neva Oller, Jeanne Koslowsky, Khrista Van Buren, and Lori Schmidtberger.

Marion County Fair queen finalists are Janet Reimer of Goessel, Margo Schroeder of Hillsboro, and Marian Lawrence of Marion. Miss Marion County of 1968 will be announced tonight (Thursday). Miss Schroeder is the winner of the swimsuit competition and received a trophy. Carol Bowers of Marion was selected Miss Congeniality by the other girls in the contest. She received a silver tray with the title.

Mary Westerhaus was speaker at the Marion Kiwanis Club meeting Monday noon. She reported on her trip to Europe this summer as a scholarship student in a language institute in Germany.

Mary Schubert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Schubert of Ramona, was named District Six Dairy Princess in a contest held August 23 in Salina. As District Dairy Princess, she will compete for the state title at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson Dept. 13-14.
