Barbara Christiansen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Christiansen, Durham, was crowned as 1969 Queen of the Marion County Fair Thursday evening. Cindy Goertz was first runner-up and Bev Hoch was second runner-up.
The all new and all steel building which has recently been completed at Marion County Park and Lake is attractive both inside and out. It houses the lake office and concessions.
Army Nurse (Major) Laura Jane Bredemeier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herb Bredemeier, Marion, recently received the Army Commendation medal during ceremonies at Brooke General Hospital, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Major Bredemeier received the award for meritorious service while serving as an operating room nurse during a recent tour of duty in Vietnam with combat forces.
Marion County is fortunate this year in having three citizens achieve state wide fame. Dan Stolfus of Hillsboro is the Kansas Senior Citizen of the Year, Margo Schroeder, also of Hillsboro, is Miss Kansas for 1969, and Lillian Pierce of Marion is Kansas Mother of 1969.
Marion Cub Scouts enjoyed a fishing derby August 22 at the Marion Reservoir. Kirk O'Hair caught the longest fish, Mike Robinson and Chris Jost tied for catching the most fish. Following the derby, a picnic was enjoyed by Cubs and their families.
Cheryl Schimpf, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Schimpf, Marion, has been accepted as an instructor in the department of clothing, textiles, and interior design at Kansas State University, Manhattan. Miss Schimpf received a Master of Science degree in August of this year and a Bachelor of Science degree in 1968, both at K-State. She also is a graduate of Marion High School.
Douglas D. Bass, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl B. Bass, Marion, was commissioned a second lieutenant upon graduation August 11 from the Officer Candidate School at the U.S. Army Field Artillery Center at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
