Daryl Esslinger has established a flying academy in Marion. He has purchased the Elgin Hotel from Art Miles, and is turning the building into a headquarters for a complete aviation academy. The academy conducted classes in ground school training Monday night with over 20 students in attendance. None of the students were from Marion, but several were from surrounding communities. Tom Butler of El Dorado is the ground school instructor. Esslinger also will use the Elgin as a base of operations for his aerial spraying service, which has airplanes in Kansas, Colorado, and Texas.
Members of Marion Kiwanis Club will let shaving go by the wayside until after Old Settlers' Day. According to Gerry Harris, president, there will be prizes and awards on Old Settlers' Day to the Kiwanian sprouting the "best brush." Guests at Monday's meeting were "Deputy Dusty" Herrin of radio station KFDI, Wichita, and Gordon Wakeman, high school principal.
Patty Plenert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Plenert, enrolled this past week with 99 other students in the largest class in the 56-year history of the Wesley School of Nursing at Wichita.
Several students from Marion High School accompanied Principal Gordon Wakeman and commerce teacher Helen Reznicek to Abilene Tuesday to attend a yearbook conference. Those going were Tamara Case, Marsha Cowan, Cathy Coe, Roxanne Hague, Susan Hansen, Jan Herrick, Beverly Hoch, Chuck McElwain, Bryce Ollenberger, and Terry Plenert.
Employees and guests of Greeley Gas Company's Central Kansas district held their annual dinner Wednesday at the Ramada Inn in Junction City. Special service pin awards for years of service were presented to: E. Lester Mills, 38 years; Orlin L. Fleming, 13 years; Fern E. Frans, 5 years; Norman Roy Ensz, 3 years; Herbert N. Henshaw, 3 years; and William Helmer, 1 year.
