OCTOBER 3, 1968

A chilly 41 degrees was recorded Thursday morning on the official thermometer at the Corps of Engineers office at the Marion Reservoir.

There was a lot of critical comment on Old Settlers' Day about inconsiderate young whippersnappers who were throwing water bombs in Central Park when the program was in progress. They made a lot of noise, creating confusion, and in many instances actually showered visitors and some of the old-timers with badly aimed shots of water. Some stated that years from now the kids, when they are Old Settlers, will comment about the fun they had throwing water back in the "good old days." But most people thought it was bad manners. Seven young ladies did a lot Saturday night to offset that impression. Without telling a soul, they set about to clean the park. It was littered with waste paper, cups, newspapers, and trash of all kinds. Charlie Frans, capable caretaker of the park, got up at 5 a.m. Sunday to clean the park "so people wouldn't get a bad impression on their way to church" and found it was spotless. The seven girls who had spent the evening rounding up the trash were Theresa Hett, Jane Lentz, Sandy Hoover, Diane Weber, Kathy Regnier, Marilee McGinness, and Janice Bowers.

Mrs. Wayne Tipton of Marion announces the engagement of her daughter, Betty Jean, to Roger J. Richmond, son of Mrs. Glenn Richmond of Marion. No wedding date has been set.

The Emmanuel Baptist Church of Marion will welcome a new pastor to their pulpit on Sunday. He is Rev. Bill Cowell, a young and energetic man who has been preaching in Hoisington.

Nodie Baker, leader of the famous Rube Band, again was an inspiration to the estimated six or seven thousand people here for the Old Settlers' Day parade on Saturday. He rode on the pony-team drawn "float" which was part of the band this year, and umm-pah-pah'd his faithful tuba down Main Street to give a good strong bass section to the rendition of "Show Boy." There were about 20 members in the band (counting the horses).
