Marion City Commission in regular session Monday afternoon issued a contract to Bob Kelly Construction Company to remodel the fire station part of the Marion Municipal Building. It calls for two 9x10-foot fiberglass doors and a concrete structure with a concrete roof. This will extend the fire truck garage to accommodate the new and larger vehicles.

A Teletype was installed as a new piece of communications equipment in the Marion County Sheriff's office. It will give local and county officers improved service and enable them to enforce the law better. The Teletype was installed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. and will be maintained and served by that utility.

Roy Penland, Marion, was sworn in Monday as the new bailiff of the Marion County Division of District Court of the Eighth Judicial District. Judges Walter E. Hembrow and Albert B. Fletcher Jr. presided on the bench.

Candy Stripers are an active bunch in Marion. Nineteen of them received pins and awards last week at the Community Guild meeting held in Valley United Methodist Church. The girls have donated over 2,700 hours of work giving aid and comfort to patients at Spain Guest Home and St. Luke Hospital. Girls receiving the awards were Sue Wood, Sandra Anderson, Pam Griffith, Debbi Case, Laura Brose, Brenda Helmer, Donna Parish, Janet Lawrence, Sandra Hoover, Vickie Klassen, Anita Hett, Kathy Coe, Rosie Goentzel, Kathryn Bezdek, Betty Sue Linn, Denise Schlehuber, Lucinda Jost, Diane Weber, Gerry Warneke, and Teresa Hett.

Two giant sweet potatoes were brought in to the Record office this week. They were grown by Mr. and Mrs. Jay Mehl. One measured 9 inches and weighed 2 3/4 pounds and the other was 10 inches long and weighed 3 1/4 pounds. One potato would make a meal for a good sized family.

Mrs. Lester Gilbert had a dinner last Tuesday evening in honor of the 11th birthday of her granddaughter, Rhonda Richmond, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Richmond.
