Mayor Jack Regnier presented length of service awards to four City of Marion employees last week. Orl Stage, Ruben Winter, and Junior Bredemeier each received 25-year pins. Stage is with the power plant, Winter with the water plant, and Bredemeier is city superintendent. A.J. Coe received a 10-year award. He is a member of the fire department.
Dennis Hamm, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Hamm of Marion, won the zone contest in Punt, Pass, and Kick at Salina Saturday for 13-year-old boys. He will now go to Kansas City on Saturday for the district contest. Doug Heerey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Heerey Jr., took third place at Salina for 11-year-olds.
The U.S. Department of Commerce Census Bureau has released a report on Marion County, showing a total of 1,468 farms in 1969. This is a drop of 262, or almost 10 percent from the last official census survey in 1964 when there were1,630 farms in the county.
Quarterbacks Pat Kelly and Brad Heerey teamed up to lead Coach Dave Stroud's Wildcats to a 22-8 victory over the Cottonwood Falls Bullpups in a junior high league game Thursday evening at Florence.
Two Marion County students will attend the Kansas vs. Nebraska football game in Lincoln Saturday as members of the "Marching Jayhawks" KU band. They are Dan Steinel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Steinel, and Eric Meyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Meyer. Dan plays baritone and Eric plays the tuba in the all-male band.
Two girls, Jean Holt and Marilee McGinness, who flew to Germany last summer and stayed with German families, told of their experiences and showed slides Monday at the Kiwanis Club meeting Monday. The girls and their teacher, Margot Wiebe, were introduced by Gordon Wakeman, school principal.
Homecoming at Centre High School will be Friday when the Cougars play against Marion. Queen candidates are Ann Jirak, Susie Klenda, Mary Noone, Kathy Mueller, and Bev Backhus. Their escorts will be Fred Schubert, Joe Navrat, Gary Holub, Bill Stuchlik, and Garth Strand.
At the Cub Scout Pack 102 meeting Monday evening, Kevin Jirak, Greg Boyle, Bard Herbel, and Jeff Harris were welcomed as Cub Scouts. Nathan Smith and Danny Sherbert were welcomed as prospective Cubs and joined at the close of the meeting.
