Marion County highway department employees and their families enjoyed the annual picnic at Marion County Lake Hall Oct. 21 with 93 persons present. Persons who retired during the past year were presented with retirement pins by Lysle Russell. They were Clyde Decker, Durham, and Pete Schroeder, Hillsboro, both 25 years as motor grader operators and Roy Hobein, Marion, 33 years as foreman of a culvert crew.
Over 300 motorcycles entered the Flint Hills "Hare and Hound" motorcycle races Sunday. Nowhere near that number completed the course. At least seven riders were injured, some seriously. The race started at the old stone school house east of August Lalouette's. It was a 20-mile path and riders made three laps of the course. Steve Hett of Marion won first place in the 250cc class and was fourth overall.
Two high school musicians from Marion County are members of the Wichita Symphony Orchestras. Denise Westerhaus, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin G. Westerhaus and a sophomore at Marion High School, plays first violin in the senior orchestra. Rene Feil, sophomore at Hillsboro High School, plays cello in the junior orchestra.
Four members of Centre Lodge received 50-year pins Oct. 19 at the Masonic Temple. Pins were awarded to Fred Rosenberg, Paul Shahan, A.L. Kirchner, and John Riddle. Twenty-five year pins were received by Carl Bass, Jack Highsmith, Dr. W.M. Thies, and Ed Winter.
Joannie Elling, Marion High School senior and daughter of Carl Elling, was crowned football queen at the Warrior homecoming Friday night by Debi Case, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Case Jr., last year's queen, who came from Denton, Texas, especially for the event.
Bryce Ollenberger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Ollenberger of Marion, was a member of the prize-winning cast of "Sun, Son," at the University of Kansas, Lawrence. The production won a sweep of $1,500 in prizes in the annual Varsity Show competition of Broadcast Music, Inc., New York City.
Larry Boese will open his newly remodeled service station at 147 West Main on Wednesday under the name "Larry's Fina Service." A graduate of Pittsburg State College, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Boese of Marion.
