The Shoe Box, a new self-service shoe store, opened in Marion last Saturday. The store is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Steve Winchester and operated by Mrs. Dorothy Osburn of Peabody, sister of Mrs. Winchester. The store features a full line of shoes for the entire family, and also includes hosiery and purses. It is located in a recently remodeled building belonging to the Winchesters at 416. E. Main.
A record milo crop in Marion County has taxed the capacity of grain storage facilities. Unable to get boxcars fast enough, elevator operators did not turn away any grain. Robert Oller, manager of the Cooperative Grain Elevator in Marion, filled his elevator to capacity and started piling the grain on the ground. Many farmers are reporting from 60 to 100 bushels per acre on their milo this year.
Weddings reported in this week's issue included those of Ruby Winkley, Marion, and Delbert McElfresh, Melvern, on Sept 29; Lenora Ann Rudolph, Marion, and Larry Joe Baxa, Cuba, on Oct. 26; and Loretta Jo Sramek and Stuart C. Crippen, both of Denver, Colo., on Aug. 24.
Mr. and Mrs. Levern Ottensmeier received word recently that their son, A1/c James L. Ottensmeier, had the misfortune of breaking his right arm while working on a plane at Naha Air Force Base, Okinawa. The accident occurred when a wing flap came down on his arm while he was working between the flap and wing.
There were two winners in this week's Cash Day drawing. Sonja Maddox, Marion, received $45 and Hans Hansen, Marion, received $35. Nancy A. Norris, Marion, missed $20, Ronald Boyer, Marion, missed $20 and Mrs. Hugh Hamlin, Marion, missed $20.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Klose hosted a dinner Sunday evening in honor of their son, Garry, who left on Tuesday for duty with the Air Force at Lackland AFB, Texas.
Mr. and Mrs. June Jost announce the engagement of their daughter, Rita Kay, to Douglas L. Janzen, son of Mr. and Mrs. LaVern Janzen of Hillsboro. The wedding date has been set for January 19.
