The Marion County Soil Conservation District has been honored for outstanding work by receiving second place in the 1969 Goodyear award for the east half of the state of Kansas. Jim Peters of Lehigh accepted the award for the district at the convention of the conservation districts held in Wichita December 1.
Lucky winners of the eight fine prizes donated by Marion merchants in the Christmas season drawing for boys and girls Thursday night were John Silhan, Ethel Cox, Loraine Wiens, Lori Hett, Susan McCarty, Jerald Waner, Suzy Higgins, and Robert Irwin.
Explorer Scouts of Marion spent Sunday at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita. Those in attendance were Henry Bingaman, Roger Schmidtberger, Dennis and Leonard Schafers, Doug Marler, Mike Jackson, Don Smith and Daryl Enos and leaders, LeRoy Bingaman, Eugene Enos and Kenneth Schwendiman.
Staff Sgt. Eddie Beck was one of three men awarded commendation medals by the Army for services and efforts to assist fellow passengers after a crash of a DC4 jetliner Nov. 22 at Anchorage, Alaska. There were 47 people killed when the commercial jet plunged off the runway and burst into flames.
