The bronze plaque has been installed at Marion's Memorial Fountain located in tree shaded Central Park. The plaque states: "This Memorial conceived and initiated by Wharton Hoch is dedicated to the citizens of Marion by or on behalf of the following persons and by many friends of the community." Then follows names of persons who either donated or were honored by major contributions. A list of other contributors is located in the Marion County Historical Museum nearby.
The Marion City Commission has let a contract to Herb Bredemeier to build a 120x50 feet metal building with a concrete floor. The building will be the new city shop, to replace the former shop building which burned this past summer.
Miss Kathy Westerhaus, bride-elect of Jerome Doak, was honored this week at three bridal showers. Hostesses at a shower at the D.W. Wheeler home were Mrs. Wheeler, Mrs. J.A. Wheeler, Mrs. J.K. Muse, and Mrs. David W. Wheeler. Mrs. Ira Newcomer and Mrs. Wharton Hoch were hostesses at the Newcomer home Saturday afternoon, and Mrs. Ed Sandwell and Mrs. John Sandwell hosted the final one Sunday afternoon at the Ed Sandwell home.
Devin Francis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Francis, celebrated his 10th birthday Monday afternoon with a party at his home. Invited guests were Brian Taylor, Brad Esslinger, Jim Dreier, Bruce Williams, Doug Webb, David Richmond and Dirk Francis.
Births announced in this issue included a 9 pound 2 ounce son, Ty Aaron, to Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Siebert of Cedar Point and a 6 pound 15 ounce son, Jeremy Thomas, to Mr. and Mrs. Larry Ensey of Wichita.
Miss Vicki Boese, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Boese, Marion, graduated from Vernon's School of Cosmetology, Wichita, in June and took her examination at Kansas State Board of Cosmetology in Topeka in August.
A big square dance festival will be held at the Brown Building in Peabody September 25 with Bud Pierce and Ken Oppenlander as callers. The festival is expected to draw hundreds of dancers.
Jan VanBuren, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl VanBuren, completed the requirements for her diploma at Brown-Mackie School of Business in Salina. She majored in the clerical automation course.
