William H. Carpenter, one of the state's most eminently successful criminal trial lawyers, and a resident of Marion for over 60 years, died Dec. 24 at a Newton hospital. He was 89 years of age.

MHS Class of 1952 held their first alumni meeting, a potluck dinner, meeting, and dance Dec. 27 in the high school gym. It was decided to hold annual meetings, the next one being during Christmas vacation next year. Officers were chosen for the year with Gordon Wingerd, president; John Newcomer, vice president; and Mary Ann Skibbe, secretary-treasurer.

Winners in the portrait contest conducted by Broadstreet Studio are pictured in this issue. There are three divisions with winners listed in first, second, and third places. They are, 1st group, J. Patricia Hein, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Hein; Mark Urbanek, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vladimir Urbanek; Anita Seibel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Seibel; 2nd group, Ruth Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. LaVern Miller; Tamara Case, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rosse Case; Cheryl Wooldridge, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wooldridge; 3rd group, (tie) Steven Heinz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Heinz, and Patty Sue Plenert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Plenert; Patrick Costello, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Costello; and Linda Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Miller. The contest was judged by Mrs. Alex Stratman, Hillsboro; Mrs. Howard Groening and Mrs. Russell Hett, Marion; and Mrs. Otto Rindt, Lincolnville.

The Sub Deb Club held its annual dance Christmas evening at the Country Club. Present were Shirley Tiemeier, Diana Herbert of Stafford, Ginger Price, Marilyn Reh, Karen Brodhead, Vera Remmers, Glenda Razor, Genny Krch, Nancy Allen, Nancy Burkholder, Maurice Hollar, Leslie Powell Jr., Don Ecker, Gordon Wingerd, J.B. Miesse, John Wooldridge, Joe Sklenar, Jerry Brose, Dwight Fruechting, and Jerry Tuell. The party was chaperoned by Mr. and Mrs. H.L. McDaris.
