Miss Cynthia Ann Horst, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Horst, Florence, is "Miss 1953" the first baby born in St. Luke Hospital this year. Cynthia Ann was born Jan. 2 and weighed 8 pounds 3 ounces. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Waner, Florence, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Horst, Burns.

Marion Marble and Granite, a widely-known local monument firm, operated for many years by Jack Scott, has been leased effective Jan. 1. The new operators will be Walter Keazer and Jack Helmer, both of whom have been associated with Mr. Scott for some time.

Alice Faye Ward, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Ward, was one of 12 students at the Washington University School of Nursing in St. Louis, who recently received their white caps of student nurses at the traditional "capping" ceremony.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hollar announce the engagement of their daughter, Loyette, to Kenneth Swanson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Swanson, Michigan City, Inc. Both Miss Hollar and her fiancé are employed by the Marion school system as music supervisors. The wedding date has not been set.

Mr. and Mrs. Albert Williams have received word from their daughter, Betty, who is in school at Amsterdam, Holland, that she had spent Christmas with friends at Dusseldorf, Germany. Different customs of observing Christmas, meeting the people, and seeing the country made for a very pleasant holiday for Betty.

A wedding of interest to Marion friends was that of Mrs. Louise Poppe, daughter of Emil Schubert, Ramona, to Mr. Harry Klose, which was solemnized Dec.28 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Marion.

Dorothy Sandwell, who is in nurse training at Dodge City and doing college work at St. Mary's of the Plains girls' school, was home for the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.O. Sandwell.
