Kansas will break into the national picture Jan. 20 in more ways than just the inaugural of Gen. Dwight Eisenhower as president. Lt. Col. Elmer Hollar, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hollar, Marion, has been appointed to head a gigantic display of 400 jet planes in a fly-over of the inaugural parade. Another tie-in with the interesting coincidences of the inaugural is that Elmer is a graduate of the Abilene, Kansas, high school, Ike's hometown.
Janice Riffel of the Pilsen Lucky 13 4-H Club won the county cherry pie baking contest Jan. 10 at Marion High School and is heading for the state contest Feb. 2 at Manhattan.
The eighth grade class will present two one-act plays Jan. 19 in the high school auditorium. Cast for the first play, "Life of the Party," includes Warren Gardner, Mary Lou Conyers, Jeanne Kline, Johnsie Just, Robert Eckstrom, Joyce Ubben, Joyce Pientka, Betty Matthews, Bill Meredith, John Shull, Roland Vogel, and Michael Seaton. The second of the two plays, "Life With Bobby Sox," will be presented by Margaret McClain, Jan Blackwelder, Bill Burkholder, Margie Bernhardt, Patricia Dixon, Wayne Britton, and John Minear.
Cpl. Bill Markham, son of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Markham, enlisted in the Army and attended jump school at Fort Benning, Ga., graduating in Marion 1951. He now is attached to the 11th Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky., but is stationed at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind.
Eddie Holub, 12-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Holub, Tampa, a polio victim since 1949 at St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, had the exciting thrill of talking to Gene Autry of Hollywood Thursday morning and on Friday he was interviewed and a tape recording was broadcast over station KFH, Wichita, on the 11:30 a.m. program.
The six children, relatives, and neighbors gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Hedstrom Dec. 31 to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary,
