Members of Lillian Pierce's Register of Deeds staff were surprised, then almost over-whelmed last week when a large and unique job was tossed in their laps — the copying of 67 original patents on Marion County property. The Scully Estate is the landowner filing the original deeds which are dated closely following the Civil War in the late 1860s and early 1870s. They are printed on almost parchment-like paper, filled in with a Spencerian flourish, and signed by President Ulysses S. Grant. They represent the basic title to approximately 26,000 acres in Marion County.
Sgt. S.E. Richardson, Marion, recently was selected as "Soldier of the Month" at the Bremerhaven (Germany) Port of Embarkation, where he is serving as a technician at the port U.S. Army Hospital.

The four Marion women, whose crowning glory is mostly gray, were lunching at the Broadview dining room at Emporia the other evening after the Fred Waring concert. The Waring orchestra and chorus personnel also were there. Sauntering past the table of Marion women, the affable leader said, "Hello, GIRLS." Whereupon one of them blushed profusely and the other three all but followed him to hear more.
