Another new business will soon open in Marion, according to contracts signed this week. A Dairy Queen, nationally known ice cream merchandising firm, has approved a local franchise to Ezra Bernhardt for this new business enterprise.

The San Ore Construciton Co., McPherson, has been doing the preliminary work of resurfacing U.S.-56N through Marion the past week. They have been widening West Santa Fe Street.

Alfred Konarik, 15, had a rather close call last Sunday afternoon while swimming in a farm pond east of Pilsen. A number of the boys of the neighborhood were enjoying a swim in the pond which is used by the boys during the summer when Alfred faltered in the 15-foot deep water, apparently became frightened and went under. Leonard Navrat saw the boy in trouble and saw him going under for the second time and dived in to help. The boys got Alfred out, administered artificial respiration and he was soon out of danger.

Christine Herbert, assisted by her mother, Mrs. Doug Herbert, entertained a number of friends Saturday in celebration of her seventh birthday. Those present included Mary Melton, Jean Morse, Janet Stiller, Mary Jane Meredith, Ethel Brunner, and Sue Reh.

Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Novak, Tampa, announce the engagement of their daughter, Mary Lou, to Mr. Edmund Kroupa, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kroupa Sr., Marion. The wedding will take place in the fall.

Pfc. Kenneth Sly, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Sly, recently spent a two week furlough with home folks. He returned to Fort Campbell, Ky., on Sunday and was informed that he would be sent to Fort Jackson, S.C., to enter clerk-typist school.

Dave Montgomery won the medalist trophy at the Marion Country Club's 4th of July tournament with a score of 72. Harold Keazer won the handicap trophy with a net score of 59.
