A series of misfortunes which have befallen Mrs. Lee Bowers were added to last Thursday night when a bolt of lightning out of an almost clear sky killed four head of her cattle, all uninsured. The list of her misfortunes includes the death of her husband in April, her ripening wheat fields completely wiped out in June by hail, and now this.
Betty Williams, who has received a Fullbright scholarship, left Aug. 5 for Summit, N.J., where she will visit friends until Aug. 21. She then will sail from New York aboard the Dutch liner Rheindam for Amsterdam where she will attend Amsterdam University for a year.
Judy Richards was nine years old Saturday so her mother, Mrs. Shirley Richards, asked a group of her friends to help her celebrate the occasion. The children were taken to a matinee and afterward enjoyed refreshments at the Richards home. Those present were Helen and Charlotte Langley, Mary Ann and Jimmy Stevens, and Johnny Hoover.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bernard, Mary Ann and Danny of Russell were guests at the Gail Merrill home this weekend. Mary Ann remained to accompany Carolyn Merrill to Camp Wood, Elmdale, for a 10-day camping period.
Mrs. Henry Collett gave a party at her home Tuesday for her son Stephen's seventh birthday. Guests were Johnnie Higgins, Kenneth Bowers, Ray Remmers, Thad Meierhoff, Leonard Hoffman, David Scharenberg, John Umberger, Gary Hammer, Mrs. Art Meierhoff, and Mrs. David Bowers and Gregory.
Leland Deines, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Deines, broke his arm while roller skating Friday afternoon.
During a double ring ceremony performed at 9 a.m. Aug. 9 at St. John's Nep. Church, Pilsen, Florence Alice Silhan became the bride of Arnold Lester Holt. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. William L. Silhan and the late Mr. Silhan. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman A. Holt of Herington.
