The 8 p.m. closing hours by Marion retail merchants last Saturday night was well received by the general public. Most people were well aware of the change and governed their purchasing accordingly, it was stated. The 8 p.m. closing hours will remain in force throughout the winter months.

Last Friday, in an attempt to learn more about the various types of swimming pools, Marion city commissioners Kreuter, Keazer, and Newcomers, accompanied by Ed Sandwell and Bill Meyer, traveled over 400 miles in the northern part of the state studying as many pools as possible. They visited pools in Mankato, Washington, Marysville, Junction City, Camp Wa-Shun-Ga, and Rock Springs Ranch.

The Marion Warriors are now in the top spot of the Cottonwood Valley League basketball race, tied with Herington, after their victory over that school here Tuesday night. Marion won over Herington 50-43.

Albert Stenzel announces this week that he has leased the Standard Oil Co. service station on the hill and has taken over its operation.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stroda, Herington, announce the engagement of their daughter, LaVada, to Paul Holub, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Holub, Pilsen. No wedding date has been set.

Margie Bernhardt asks that all twirlers meet at the new gym Saturday morning at nine o'clock to practice for the basketball game Feb. 1 when they will perform.

Mrs. Wayne Tipton asked guests for a six o'clock dinner Tuesday evening in celebration of her daughter Betty's birthday. Those present included Jean Morse, Mary Stephens, Mary Melton, JoEllen Atherton, Sharon Nelson, Cheryl Caselman, Ruth Lais, Kay Amick, Rose Loveless, Helen Olsen, Anita Schlehuber and Betty.

Feminine swimming enthusiasts at Emporia State Teachers College, who are members of the Splash Club, include Nancy Keazer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Keazer, Marion; Carol Miser, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Miser of Strong City, formerly of Marion; and Rhonda Rath, president of the club and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Evan Rath of Florence.

A church basketball league, somewhat similar to the popular church softball league, has been organized and will start a regular schedule of games on Monday evening. The six teams and their representatives are: Youngtown, Dave Thomas; Christian, John Summervill; Presbyterian-Lutheran, Jack Beaston; St. Mark's, Joe Dvorak; Methodist, Jerry Dyck; Evans, Earl Janzen.
