Sub zero cold wave closed schools and industries this week. A compressor head breakdown of a Kansas Power and Light station near Abilene caused a temporary reduction in gas pressure throughout Marion County. Temperatures ranged over the county from zero to an unofficial ten below with strong winds, making it seem even cooler, and making homes, schools and business houses all the harder to heat.
Top award for 1953 of the Kansas Authors Club contest in light verse class was announced this week to have been won by Mrs. Inez Ray, Marion. Mrs. Ray's light verse entitled "Autumn" won first place in its class. She also receive honorable mention for a verse in the free verse class.
Mr. and Mrs. Dave Weathers, Antelope, announce the marriage of their daughter, LaVona, to Pvt. Ervin Loveless, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Loveless. The ceremony took place Jan. 14 at the home of Rev. Leslie Wiebe, Marion, pastor of the Antelope Methodist church. Pvt. Loveless is home on a two-week furlough following his basic training at Fort Riley and will return there for further training.
A colorful circus motif was used in the decorations and refreshments when Mrs. Rosse B. Case entertained young guests and their mothers Monday afternoon in celebration of her daughter, Tamara's, third birthday. The guest list included Susan Hansen, Cathleen Costello, Beverly Elling, Beverly Hoch, Janice Wygle, Susan Cavender, Kathy Estes, Pattie Sue Plenert, Jill Kline, Helen Jackson, Jeanette McDaris, and Tamara's grandmother, Mrs. Ella Socolofsky.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Koch, Newton, announce the engagement of their daughter, Glenda Lee, to Jack Marvin Taylor Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Taylor Sr., Worth, Missouri. An early spring wedding is planned.
Mr. and Mrs. Warren Olsen invited the teacher and pupils of Morning Star school to their home Wednesday after school for a birthday party in honor of their son, Bill. Additional guests were Mrs. Albert Ollenberger and Bryce, Marion, and Mrs. Ernest Siebert and Bill of Hillsboro.
