Word was received this week by Pilsen Postmaster Albert Stika that the post office there would be closed after March 8. This is a move that has been proposed by the Post Office Department for some time due to the reduced business and number of patrons at that office. The 28 patrons who now receive their mail through the Pilsen post office will be served by Rural Route 4 out of Marion.
Two one-act plays will be presented by the Thespians of Marion High School Thursday evening at the city building. In the cast of "Major Milliron Reports" are Roland Vogel, Wade Robertson, John Minear, Warren Gardner and Bruce Coe. The cast of "Sis o' the Ozarks" is comprised of Margaret McClain, Elda Pankratz, Maxine Hinz, Mickey Seaton, Bob Eckstrom, John Price, Frank Leuschaft and Jon Thole.
The Kansas Day picnic, held by the Kansas Society of Long Beach, California, each year was greeted with rain, hail and snow this year, but in spite of that, over 300 persons registered. Among those registering were nine from Marion County: Mr. and Mrs. Charles Maggard, Jay Pratt, Pat Heerey, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Lucas and Marion Kohn, formerly of Marion, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Foth, formerly of Hillsboro.
Six little Indians gathered at the home of another little Indian, Eddie Cook, Monday morning to help him celebrate his sixth birthday. Each little boy was presented with bow and arrows and given a war bonnet when he arrived. These they wore as they played Indian games and enjoyed cake and ice cream which also carried out the Indian theme. The boys, all pupils of the afternoon kindergarten group, were Marc Hauser, Randy Broadstreet, Douglas Westerhaus, Bryce Ollenberger, and Max Rector.
The Marion Junior High eighth grade team remained undefeated last week by winning 48-4 over Florence. John Christensen was high with 11, followed by Gerald Kelsey with 8.
There is a new social and study club for Marion in the near future which is being sponsored by the 20th Century Club. The committee from 20th Century Club who will assist with the organization includes Mrs. Wm. McCartney, Mrs. Rosse Case, Mrs. Bill Meyer and Mrs. Floyd Yaussi.
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Hilsenbeck of Marion, Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Hiebert and Mr. and Mrs. John Toews of Hillsboro, and Mr. and Mrs. Randal Pritz, Lincolnville will attend the KEC meeting in Topeka Wednesday and Thursday. The ladies will have tea with Mrs. Docking Wednesday afternoon at the governor's mansion.
Miss Margie Bernhardt, MHS senior, was crowned "Queen of the Court" last Friday at the Marion-Florence game.
