The first countywide spelling bee in quite a few years was held last Friday morning in the county courtroom. Winner of the event was Anabel Unruh, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Unruh, of District 127 (Grand Central). In second place was Marilyn Bartel, a 7th grader from District 129 (Brudertal). Marilyn is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Bartel. Third high went to Ora Hett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Hett, of District 41 (Morning Star). Fourth high speller was Beth Pankratz of District 128 (Countryside). She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Pankratz of Canton.
Dick Varenhorst celebrated his 13th birthday Tuesday with a dinner given by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Varenhorst, when covers were laid for the guest of honor and Dick Morse, Gary Roberts, Dennis Pankratz, Dick's grandmother, Mrs. Orville Miesse, Mrs. Al Richardson, Janet Varenhorst and Mr. and Mrs. Varenhorst.
The girls vocal trio from Marion High School will be among the many artists appearing on the fourth annual "Golden Deed" Cerebral Palsy Telethon this weekend from Wichita's Arcadia Theatre. The trio is comprised of Mary Lou Conyers, Maxine Hinz, and Margie Bernhardt, with LaVina Hoffman as accompanist.
Ed Costello's birthday was celebrated Tuesday evening with a steak fry in their backyard patio. Besides Mr. and Mrs. Ed Costello and children, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Costello and son, Gene, and Mr. and Mrs. Martin Hajek, all of Tampa, were here for the birthday celebration.
Congratulations: to Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Klose, whose little son, Michael Gene, was born April 5 at St. Luke Hospital; to Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bina, whose daughter, Rose Marie, was born April 8 at St. Luke Hospital; and to Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Laramore, Wichita, whose daughter, Brenda Louise, was born March 26.
The annual 7th and 8th grade banquet will be held Friday evening in the Hill grade School. Tim Williams will give the welcome address which will be responded to by Eileen Pavey.
