A campaign to raise $15,000 for a seminary purse to be used to educate one Catholic priest a year in the name of Father Emil J. Kapaun, hero priest who died in a North Korean prison camp, officially started Sunday afternoon at the Broadview Hotel, Wichita. Contributed Sunday afternoon to start the project was $1200. Local people attending include Rev. Arthur Tonne and Paul Meysing. Dr. Harry Klenda, Wichita, is chairman of the executive finance committee.
Matters taken up by the Marion City Commission Monday evening included the placing of permanent brackets for flag staffs, welcome banners, etc. in the business district. Brackets to be mounted on the new light poles will be made by the school vocational shops from material furnished by the city. The Chamber of Commerce will buy the American flags and welcome banners and staffs.
Four Marion High School juniors were selected this week to attend Boys State in Wichita and Girls State in Lawrence in June. Going to Boys State are Johnny Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Williams, and Kenneth Gardner, son of Rev. and Mrs. Hugh Gardner. Girls are Judy Thatch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. DuVall and Carol Allen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Allen.
Mrs. Ray Longhofer entertained a number of school friends of her daughter, Pat, Monday after school in celebration of her 11th birthday. Those present included Sharon Bartel, Patty Funk, Sharon Blankley, Karen Jost, Donna Jost, Rosalie Dohner, Ann Batt, Donna Haas, Julia Wooldridge, Lucinda Hauser, Janet Stiller, Judy Richards, Kay Love, and Beverly Winter.
Eight couples from here attended the state square dance festival Saturday evening at Memorial Auditorium, Topeka. Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Gail Merrill, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Navrat, Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Ross, Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Tidwell, Mr. and Mrs. Jay Beaston, Mr. and Mrs. Bud Pierce, Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Hassinger, and Dr. and Mrs. T.C. Ensey.
