Marion County towns and farms got a good flood scare last Thursday night, but in most cases it was just a scare. Another inch or two of rainfall at the "wrong' time would have made the situation much worse, as it was in other parts of the state.
Marion's stellar mile relay team, consisting of Junior Bledsoe, Jim Christensen, Jim Gilbert and Wade Robertson, set a new state record for Class A schools in that event at the state track meet in Wichita Saturday Their time was 3.28.1, bettering Haskell's old record of 3:29.9 by almost two seconds.
Work has been progressing steadily on Marion's new municipal swimming pool in spite of unfavorable construction weather during the past few weeks. The contractor reports they are almost on schedule and, given several good working days, will be right up in line.
The hospital benefit which was to have been last week, had to be postponed on account of the flood scare. It will be held Tuesday of next week at the city building. The benefit is for the much needed wing to be added to St. Luke Hospital.
The Silver Jubilee of the Priesthood of Father Arthur Tonne, Pilsen, will be celebrated Tuesday, May 28, with a Solemn High Mass at 10 a.m.
Archie Marler's Cozy Café has recently been re-opened after undergoing extensive remodeling. The counter was taken out and a series of booths built where it had been, making a row of booths on each side of the room with aisle between. Other renovation and painting adds to the attractive interior of the eating place.
Jim Oborny, member of the graduating class at Tampa High School, was chosen as the "Outstanding Senior" this year by the Moffitt-Crandall Post of the American Legion. Oborny is the third in the Oborny family to be awarded the same honor. Paul Oborny received the honor in 1954 and Bill Oborny in 1952.
Mrs. Agnes Price, assisted by Mrs. Fred Muck, served a three-course breakfast Sunday morning to the following high school seniors of the Methodist church: Margaret McClain, Dale Johnston, John Minear, Larry Olsen and John Price. Additional guests were Rev. and Mrs. Grosdidier and Mrs. Kenneth Muse.
