First of school enrollment in Marion stood at a total of 559 pupils this week. Enrollment in the high school was down some to 166, due mainly to a large graduating class, and a small incoming freshman class. The term ended last spring with 187 students. There are 43 seniors, 60 juniors, 32 sophomores, and 31 freshmen. At Bown-Corby there are 52 in kindergarten, 49 in first grade, 51 in second and 35 in third, for a total of 187. At Hill grade, there are 37 in fourth grade, 38 in fifth, 41 in sixth, 35 in seventh, and 33 in eighth, for a total of 186.
Ruby Schmidt purchased Linda's Lunch from Linda Lipps September 1 and has taken over operation of the café. From now on it will be known under the former original name of "Del Mar Café."
This newspaper last week passed, without special effort, its 84th year of continuous publication. That's a long time to be in one business in one place, but all in all, the "old rag" has enjoyed it and is looking ahead to more and better years to come.
Girl Scout Troop #1 enjoyed a picnic and wiener roast in the city park Thursday, followed by their regular meeting. Officers elected for the year are: Janet Wheelock, president; Mary Sue Reh, vice president; Georgie Helmer, scribe; Faith Kelsey, treasurer; Deanna Kimball, sergeant of arms; and Connie Fisher, assistant sergeant of arms.
Miss Florence Ruth Hefley, daughter of Mrs. Anna Hefley of Hillsboro, exchanged marriage vows with J.C. Ehrlich, son of Mrs. Lena Ehrlich Saturday evening, September 2 at six o'clock at the Strassburg church.
Jan Rathert celebrated her 12th birthday by a party given at her home September 1. The following guests were present: Sue Ann Bratton, Karen Thole, Lou Esther Wheeler, Diana Vinduska, Lucinda Hauser, Joyce Remmers, Janice Weber, Ethel Brunner, Dorothy Hedrick, Ruth Muck, and Bess Haizlip.
A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Marler, September 3, whom they have named Douglas Allen.
