A total of 536 pupils enrolled Tuesday in the first day of school at Marion for the 1953-54 term. This is the largest opening day total in recent years, according to Superintendent A.J. Shull. There were 167 at Bown-Corby grade school, 178 at the Hill grade school, and 191 in high school.
Navy Ensign Alex Case was recently awarded his third Air Medal by Navy Capt. Otis C. Gregg, aboard the attack carrier USS Princeton. Ens. Case, a member of Attack Squadron 155, was cited for distinguished combat service during the Korean conflict.
Eight-year-old Jerry Siebert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilmer Siebert of north of Aulne, is pictured climbing a 12-foot stalk of feed corn in a field at their farm. This size and height was not at all unusual over the 28-acre field of Mexican June corn being cut for ensilage. Also helping their father with filling silo were Ed, 12, and Richard, 10.
The Stardusters will furnish music for the country club dance Saturday evening. Back to School will be the theme for the evening. Committee members are Mr. and Mrs. Ed Costello, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Elling, Mr. and Mrs. Scottie G. Gound, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. McCartney, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Montgomery, Mr. and Mrs. John Berns, Peabody, and Jean Cleland.
Mrs. Fred Muck and daughter Ruth entertained several of Ruth's friends in the sixth grade and their mothers Thursday afternoon at a musical tea. Each girl participated in the program. Attending were Mrs. A.J. Shull and Karen, Mrs. Sam Thole, Karen and Elizabeth, Mrs. David Wheeler and Lou, Mrs. Robert Bratton and Sue Ann, Mrs. Dean Gleason, Anita, Deana, and Garnet, and Mary Lou Schmidt. Special guests were sMrs. Karl Schroeder and Karen and Mrs. John Wheeler.
Members of St. Mark's parish gathered in the city building basement Wednesday evening to bid goodbye to Father Meier, who left Thursday to assume his new duties at the parish in Chase. Following a potluck supper, he was presented with a purse of $100 from the parishioners and a leather traveling kit from the choir.
