The Marion school system is the owner of a former Army staff car, a 1951 Chevrolet in good condition that they bought "for a song" at surplus sale in Topeka last week. They will repaint it and put it to general school use.

Judge A.L. Whitlock, long -time Florence resident, will be 100 years old Sunday, Oct. 21, and the city has proclaimed the day "Judge Whitlock Day" in his honor.

Al Bernhardt, owner of Marion Hardware, has won an expense paid trip to Louisville, Kentucky, and will leave by train Sunday and return Thursday. The award is for outstanding sales of General Electric appliances.

From the Antelope news: Helen Weathers entertained several of her classmates Friday evening with a slumber party at the home of her sister, Mrs. Ervin Loveless. Barbara Holub, Marlys Stika and Judy Haefner came home from school with her and were supper guests. Don Vinduska brought Rita Silhan and Nadine Tiemeier over after supper. Jim Dody joined the group and all attended the show at Marion. The girls returned with Helen to the home of her sister and spent he night, returning to their homes Saturday morning.

A harvest moon furnished an appropriate setting for the 20th Century Club wiener roast Monday evening when the group entertained their husbands. Everyone drove to the Bill Richardson farm west of town and from there rode in hayracks to the setting of the wiener roast.

A report from the Canal Zone to E.D. "Gus" Fish, Emporia State College basketball coach, reveals that Ronnie Slaymaker, former E-State varsity cager, is the sparkplug on the Fort Kobbe basketball team. Slaymaker is a graduate of Peabody High School. He plans to major in physical education with the goal of teaching and coaching following college graduation.

The national Thespian Society of Marion High School, Troop 670, of the dramatics department held its initiation of new members last Monday, Officers are: president, Bob Eckstrom; vice president, Frank Leutschaft; secretary, Margaret McClain; treasurer, Margie Bernhardt; clerk Elda Pankratz; reporter, Bruce Coe; sponsor, Ruby Reed. Other members of the troop are: Roland Vogel, Wade Robertson, John Minear, John Price, Jon Thole, Mickey Seaton, Warren Gardner, Maxine Hinz, Mary Lou Conyers.
