The flu bug, of one kind or another, has hit Marion County schools pretty hard the past week. A long weekend vacation is hoped to help return attendance to normal. No serious illnesses were reported and some schools passed their peak absences this week.
When a man, going on 94 years of age, buys a new automobile, that ought to make the news columns in any paper. That's what happened here. George Hauser, Marion's eldest resident, who has lived here for 77 years and was 93 last February, bought one of the brand, spanking, new Chevys this week from Cook Motor Company, the first one delivered to a local person by the agency.
An interesting demonstration of how to build a posthole digger was given over KTVH television station Monday on the RFD program by four boys from the Future Farmers organization of Marion High School. Boys who gave the program were Jerry Kline, Garry Vogel, Gary Helmer, and Leroy Schlesener.
Sonja Sanders and Sue Summervill entertained a group of young folks Friday evening at the Sanders home honoring Roland Vogel, who is home on leave from the Air Force. The guest list included the honoree, Mickey Summervill, Lee Lohrenz, Dennis Navrat, Tom Shirley, Donna Kelsey, Wayne Thies, Colleen Allen, Warren Vogel, Carol Conyers, Paul Schmersey, Beverly Bredemeier, Neil Hoopes, Marilyn Loveless, Gary Mott of Peabody, Julia Wooldridge, Larry Klein of Durham and Sharon Diel of Florence.
Dale Miller, former and popular coach at Marion High School, Mrs. Miller, and their son, Dick, recently moved from their farm at Viola and all are teaching at Tok Junction, Alaska.
Congratulations to: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Geis, whose little son, Dale Robert, arrived at St. Luke Hospital Nov. 3; to Mr. and Mrs. John Zeiner who welcomed a little son, John Robert, born November 3 at St. Luke; and to Mr. and Mrs. Lee Roy Palmer whose second little daughter, Brenda Lee, arrived at St. Luke Nov. 6.
Roma Collett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Collett, and a sophomore student at the University of Kansas has been selected as a queen candidate of Watkins Hall and also for the Military Ball.
