One of the most outstanding senior classes in the history of Marion High School will be honored in the annual graduation exercises May 20 and 22. In addition to being the largest class ever to graduate, with 58 on the list, it also is the highest academically since any comparative records have been compiled.
About 160 people, members of Lions clubs from 11 adjacent towns, and their wives, attended a dinner meeting of the new Tampa Lions Club at Nunn's Café in Tampa May 3 when the charter was given to the Tampa club. The charter was accepted by Ed Costello, president.
The annual graduation exercises for eighth grade students from county elementary schools will be held this Friday evening in the Marion City Auditorium. Mrs. Inez Ray, Marion librarian, will be the speaker.
Miss Donna Rose Pankratz, daughter of Mr. Dan Pankratz, Marion, became the bride of Mr. Velber K. Bevan, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.K. Bevan, Chicago, Saturday evening, May 5 at eight o'clock in the Emmanuel Baptist Church.
The Marion Merchants hardball club lost their opening game Sunday when they hosted Peabody and took the bad end of a 12-1 contest. Players on the Marion team included Max Hayen, K. Conyers, G. Tajchman, Gail Hiebert, W. Woerz, D. Fruechting, E. Janzen, D. Tajchman, B. McKibbin, G. Ryman, and C. Jones. In the game, Warren Woerz hit a home run and there was a two bagger by Earl Janzen.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kline, Marion, have announced the engagement of their daughter, Arlene Mae, to Vernon LaVall Bowers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bowers, Marion. No wedding date has been set.
