l..P. Richter, head of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, former Marion and Hillsboro resident, and former Marion County Sheriff, died in Topeka today after a long and critical illness.
The Marion chapter of FFA won first place and $100 in prize money in the Farm Mechanics exhibits at the Kansas Free Fair in Topeka. The Marion exhibit included a power hoist by Dwight Kruse, a pipe stock rack by Frank Leutschaft, a truck and truck bed by Darrel Riffel, a gate made by Larry Olsen, and a loading chute by Jon Thole.
Pestinger Construction Co. of Hillsboro this week started work on the new entrance way to the Marion Cemetery. The new work will be of Junction City cut stone and will provide an "island" with plaque to divide the roadway into and entrance and exit.
The Tampa softball team, Kansas state champions, went to St. Louis last weekend to take part in a western regional tournament and gave a very good account of themselves in spite of dropping their two games by close 1-0 and 3-2 scores.
Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Widler asked relatives for birthday cake and ice cream Tuesday evening honoring their little daughter, Jeannie Faye's first birthday.
Marion is happy to welcome a new young couple into the community. Mr. and Mrs. William Caselman, Peabody, who are now residing in Marion. The Caselmans have four children. Their residence is 328 Locust. Mr. Caselman is employed by Tumaco Equipment.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Makovec had as guests from Thursday until Sunday, Joe Nowak from the Smoky Hill Air Base, Salina, who has just recently returned from a tour of duty in Greenland, and Ray Klinzek, Chicago. Their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Madison and Jimmy of Wichita were additional guests over the weekend and Joyce Steiner of Lincolnville and Joan Svoboda of Durham joined them for homemade ice cream and cake Sunday afternoon.
Gregory May, the two-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis May, has been in a Newton hospital for the past week critically ill. He was somewhat better the first of the week, but not so well at last reports. One of the parents is with him constantly.
