DECEMBER 31, 1942

The most destructive winter storm in years struck this section of Kansas, and west, Sunday. Although the storm was not accompanied by extremely low temperatures — about 18 above was the lowest here — there was widespread damage from the high winds, together earlier with a mist rain freezing on wire and posts. All telephone lines were down in all directions out of Marion.

Travel rationing is making for a renewal of neighborliness sacrificed to fast-going these past years. One evening last week, Henry Hobein hitched up a team to the hayrack and he and Mrs. Hobein and Miss Gladys Klein drove over and spent the evening with Mr. and Mrs. William Buethe east of Antelope. Mr. Buethe said in this office Saturday that Christmas was good to them too. When they returned from an excellent Grapes School program, they found a fine dressed turkey waiting for them. Their neighbor, the Bill Richmonds, were responsible for the gift and it certainly was appreciated.
