Forty boys and girls will be staked to a start in the chicken business this spring under a plan announced by the Marion Chamber of Commerce. One thousand White Rock chickens, hatched at the DeForest Hatchery, will be allotted to 40 boys and girls — 25 each. This plan will offer Marion county boys and girls a fine chance to get started in the little business without any financial outlay.
A fine crowd of approximately 127 people attended the annual sheep producers' dinner Tuesday night served by the Methodist ladies in the church dining room.
Mrs. George Rhodes entertained at dinner Saturday evening in honor of Alfred Chill who left Monday for Leavenworth. Places were marked for Miss Virginia Dahm, Miss Corrine Pierce, Miss Kathryn Fisher, Alfred Chill, Fritz Hayen, and Bud Rhodes.
Miss Verlea Oyer, who is a student at Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Mo., has a role in the spring play put on each year by the college. Verlea did some splendid work in High School dramatics and is especially interested in that line of work.
A group of young people went to the home of Edwin Beu Jr. after church Sunday night and surprised him in honor of his birthday. Mrs. Beu, assisted by her daughter, Phyllis, served refreshments to the following: Misses Vivian Pierce, Corrine Pierce, Dorene Stenzel, and Vera Belle Province, Alfred Chill, Harry Chill, Bill Perry, and the guest of honor.
Seniors top the list with 10 students on the high school honor roll for the first six weeks of the second semester. They are Florence Irene King, Jean Knight, Betty Mersereau, Darlene Johnson, Peggy Gerstenkorn, Anna Belle Reese, Mary Alice Rees, Mac Kreuter, and Victor Reiswig.
Eddie O'Brien, brother of Mrs. Leo Brose, recently was sent to Ireland in his line of work for Lockheed. He was on his way to Africa in a bomber to do radio installation superintending when the gunner on the plane was killed. Whereupon Eddie grabbed the gun, put his trapshooting skill to work, and downed the Nazi attacker.
