A group of girls went to Abilene Sunday to attend Girl Scout camp for a week. Mr. Barney Amick made a bus of his truck and took the girls over. Mrs. Robert Amick also accompanied them. The girls are Jeanne Carpenter, Jacqueline Hawbecker, LaVerna Knight, Norma Jean Amick, Phyllis Beu, Wanda Hannaford, Jean Hagans, Donna Powell, and Corrine Longhofer.
Dr. Jas. Moffitt, popular Tampa dentist and booster, had a recent addition to his family, which gives him a wonderful group of nine children, five girls and four boys. He told this writer Monday, a bit hesitatingly, however, that it sometimes makes him hesitate to get the right name with the right child. If there's anything finer than a large family group it hasn't been discovered in the realm of human existence.
Members of the Hayen family enjoyed a picnic Sunday at the city park honoring Midshipman Charles Hayen of Annapolis who has been home on leave and Miss Gloria Creekmore of Washington, D.C., who has been a houseguest of the Hayen family the past three weeks.
Word has been received this week from Leroy Oblander, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jake Oblander, that he is now aboard another battleship after having been aboard the Yorktown, the carrier that was bombed by the Japanese at Midway Island.
Miss Martha DeMand, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. DeMand of Lincolnville, has been hired to teach home economics in Marion High School. She will fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Miss Violet Rouner.
Albert "Swede" Williams took his runabout and hydroplane speedboats to the Lincoln, Neb., meet Sunday and came out with a lion's share of awards. He won two firsts and two seconds in each class. Mrs. Williams and Betty accompanied him.
