Our pioneer fathers carried guns for protection against the Indians but it's almost to the place where nowadays we'll have to carry guns on account of the coyotes. This county is infested with a pack of them. They serenade us at all hours of the night and come sneaking around close to farm lots in broad daylight. They will surely take a lot of turkeys, lambs and poultry this summer.

The number of cases of measles developing in the county last week and this can only be described as epidemic, according to the county health officer, Dr. O.C. McCandless.

Ens. Harold Lynn Hackler, son of Mrs. Viola Hackler of Tampa, was killed in a plane crash at Pacific Beach, Wash, while participating in naval gunnery practice according to a telegram received Thursday by his mother. Apparently the engine of the plane failed for the craft fell into the ocean. Ensign Hackler's body was retrieved within a short time, but that of his companion was not until some time later.

Effective March 1, Floyd Padgett takes over the delivery in Marion of freight for the railroads and express for the American Express Company. He replaces Harvey Hett, who has handled the business for the past several months.

Mrs. Jack Youk and Charlene entertained with a farewell party for their cousin Phyllis Youk at their home Friday afternoon. The afternoon was spent playing games. Guests were Phyllis Youk, Diana Herbert, Peggy and Janice Hayward, Janet Holub, Marilyn Reh, Jeannine Williamson, Vona Lou Martin, Carol Ann Hett, Nancy Faye Allen, Violet Bartell, and Shirley Tiemeier.

Miss Maude Thompson entertained the Hill grade teachers at dinner Monday evening. The table was set for Miss Vera Newcomer, Miss Flora Boeken, Miss Julie Campbell, Miss Ruth Jo Willming, Miss Thelma Thompson, and Miss Agnes Wiens.

At the meeting of the Kiwanis Club board of directors at the Gordon Wolf home Tuesday evening, Donald Larsen was chosen as junior Kiwanis members. He is eligible to attend all meetings of the club.
