The civil service examination was given to 11 aspirants to the postmastership of Marion Saturday at the City Building. Art Schmersey conducted the written examination which was two and one-half hours in length. Those who took the examination were Miss Catherine Riddle, Hal Young, Fred Hayen, Wilbur Melcher, Lawrence Becker, Ed Good, John R. Wheeler, Max Buck, Ralph Popp, Silas Weidenbener and Harold Keazer.
Marion's entry in the revival of the play festival formerly held annually by the Cottonwood Valley League will be a one-act drama, "Gray Bread." The all-girl cast is made up of Donna Christensen, Donna Powell, Donna Hobein and Rose Marie Dvorak. Miss Janice Warders is director of the play.
An order for 50 mahogany cabinets, finished completely, ready for the installation of record player and radio, has been placed with the Marion Body and Cabinet Shop by Glenn Ratcliff, McPherson. Such an order is a nice compliment for the type of work this shop puts out. Bill McKibbin and Marion Pierce operate the shop.
Horace Sly this week contracted for the necessary ice cream and malt making equipment to open an ice cream parlor in Marion. He has rented the space adjoining the Marion Hardware and Auto Supply in the Bogart building and will have his business ready to open begin April 16 and May 1.
Coleen Vogel was guest of honor at a birthday dinner March 6 at the home of her sister, Mrs. Stanley Anderson. The guest list included Corrine Longhofer, Norma Jean Sandwell, Wanda Ireland, Imogene Mathiot, Dolores Edmunds, Donna Powell, Jean Hagans, Anita Seifert, Rose Marie Avery, Cleo Kline, Janice Socolofsky, Norma Jean Province, Jerry Lou Johnson, Sylvia Stika and Alta Stenzel. The group attended the junior class play. A slumber party followed at the home of Amelia Krispense, where Coleen is living during the school term. Those at the slumber party were Anita Seifert, Donna Powell, Rose Marie Avery, Jerry Lou Johnson and Cleo Kline.
Miss Nancy Colburn invited a number of guests to her home Saturday evening to dinner to compliment Mrs. Keith Gimson of Bellefountaine, Ohio. Guests included Mrs. Gimson, Mrs. Bud Pierce, Mrs. Jack Summerville, Miss Joan Wight and Miss Carolyn Hayen.
Rosse Case, who is attending K.U. at Lawrence and Junior Case, student at KSTC at Emporia were guests of their parents during the weekend.
The two day Tractor and Merchandise Show will be March 19 and 20. The first night's show will be presented by radio's famous Ark Valley Boys and the second night's show will be an elaborate spring style show along with a vaudeville troupe from Kansas City featuring Marvel, the Magician, The Skating Wizards, and Francine, an acrobatic dancer.
