Paul Fairbrother, manager of Penney's since July 1940, and leader in civic affairs, received notice Saturday that he has been appointed manager of the Independence store as the current manager at Independence has been called to the armed forces. Fairbrother will assume his new duties the first of next week. Announcement of the future management of the Marion store has not been made.

D.F. Urshel, a rancher who lives southeast of Florence, this week contributed $4,000 to the proposed community hospital. This is the sum necessary for a memorial room in the hospital.

Mrs. H.O. Morgan and her son, Dean, were forced to close the Cozy Cafe March 31 because of Mrs. Morgan's health. To date no one has purchased the fixtures from the owners, Mr. and Mrs. Asa Amick, although they are for sale. The loss of the café is a real blow to Marion. It enjoyed a fine patronage. Mrs. Morgan will undergo a prolonged rest and Dean will seek other employment after a tonsillectomy to be performed this coming week.

Mrs. Karl Seifert entertained at dinner Friday in honor of the birthday of her daughter, Helen. Places were marked for Miss Seifert, Miss Luella Regier, Miss Martha Hansen, Miss Lois Keazer, Miss Iola Hegle, Misses Neva and Leone Heiser.

Lt. and Mrs. Bernard Hayen are the parents of a son, Bernard Nelson, born Friday at the Marion hospital. Lt. Hayen is with the armed forces in Ireland.

Don't miss the Hereford Show in Marion Wednesday, April 12. Sponsored by the Marion Chamber of Commerce, it is Marion County's annual showing of registered Hereford cattle. There will be ribbon awards for all entries in addition to Chamber of Commerce script food in trade at any store in Marion. There will be a number of features of special interest, including the junior and senior judging contest, special noon dinner for the breeders and Marion businessmen and a weight guessing contest. The noon dinner will be served in the basement of the Evangelical church.
