Lt. Raleigh Chase Bowlby Jr. was killed in action April 8 according to a telegram received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raleigh Bowlby Sr., former Marion residents, who now live in Wichita. Lt. Bowlby was serving with the anti-tank corps of the infantry in Italy. It is thought he lost his life in the Casino drive.
A fire started by lightning completely destroyed the Salem Home, two and one-half miles southeast of Hillsboro. The stone structure, built 45 years ago, housed 25 aged men and women. No one was injured.
Miss Helen Hett entertained with a slumber party and breakfast Saturday night in honor of her birthday. The girls attended the Sub Deb dance first and then went to the Hett home. Those present were Mary Helen King, Anna Lou Hoch, Ella Marie Reinke, Vivian Pierce, Lois Mathiot, Pauline Keazer, Dorene Stenzel, Mary Lou Williams and the hostess.
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Klenda are the parents of a baby girl born April 15 at the Wichita hospital. She was given the name of Deanna Kay. Mrs. Klenda and baby were able to come home Sunday.
Theodora and Don Longhofer had quite a thrill Monday morning. When they went to the mail box to see if there was any mail, they found a little white rat terrier dog in the box. Someone had put him there.
High school students going to Emporia Friday to sing in the annual high school contest won highly superior ratings, according to their accompanist and director, Miss Marjorie King. Members of the triple trio are Imogene Mathiot, Norma Jean Amick, Phyllis Beu, Mary Jo Utting, Vivian Klein, Laverna Knight, Ilene Pierce Janice Socolofsky and Mildred Garrison. Don Kirchner, Herbert Meier, Gene Nelson and Edwin Beu composed the boys' quartet. Soloists were Ella Meier, mezzo soprano; Herbert Meier, low voice; Phyllis Beu, high soprano; Vivian Klein, mezzo soprano; and Norma Jean Amick, high soprano.
